What is a Relaxation/Remedial Massage?

One of the most useful and popular styles of massage available is the relaxation/remedial massage. The massage therapist will go slower and avoid deeper work that could be at all uncomfortable in a relaxation massage. A relaxation massage is good if you are a beginner or sensitive to pain, or if you have had lots of deep work done the day before.

How is Remedial performed?

Remedial massage is a deeper or stronger massage than relaxation. Remedial massage is about the treatment and ongoing maintenance of soft tissue to manage your injuries, chronic muscular aches and general tension. When there are times if you are suffering from a chronic ailment, brushing or soft rubbing over the skin is not going to help in the recovery. A deeper process is needed to increase circulation and relieve the tight restricted muscles or fascia. Firstly, muscle preparation is used with oils, balms and light pressure working on particular areas of tightness. Once the areas are warmed up then a technique commonly used called stripping is performed. This is the use of thumbs, knuckles, forearms and elbows gliding pressure along the muscles. Another process called friction can also be used. This is pressure applied to the grain of the muscles with the aim of realigning tissue fibres. This in turn will release connective and ridged tissue that is causing discomfort.

How is Relaxation Performed?

Relaxation massage usually is performed with lighter pressure; however, you should still feel it and its benefits! Relaxation massage mainly focuses on promoting circulation through slow stroking movements. These movements can increase the flow of the blood and lymph which then has many positive effects over our bodies.Remedial massage can be used in the treatment and prevention of injuries, but there are so many other benefits to this form of massage. There is however a slight difference between a Remedial/Relaxing Massage, and that is mainly the pressure applied.
